About

My name is Nick Kim, I also go by Young Chan. I've been breaking for over a decade and was the previous president of B-Terps (University of Maryland's breaking club) where I threw several jams. I currently live in Maryland and am still involved in the local scene.

Aside from breaking, I work as a software engineer as my day job. In my spare time I enjoy reading books (mostly on theology, ecclesiology, and fantasy), going to coffeeshops with my wife, playing guitar, and trying to finish all the side quests in Legend of Zelda TOTK.

Origin

When I was a Junior in college, I had a local breaking club president reach out to me and ask how he could throw a jam. I spun up a quick google doc outlining things like budget, how to find judges, etc. Upon creating, I scanned the internet trying to find other resources, articles, or videos on how to throw and organize a jam. I found close to none.

A few years later, and this still seems to be the case. Bboy culture is heavy on oral communication (that is, passing down knowledge by word of mouth), but I've found that there is still a lot about jams that seems like it should be common knowledge that just isn't. This blog aims to close that gap by providing helpful resources about jams, thoughts and opinions from myself and other jam promoters, and everything else in between.

Jams are an essential part of Breakin' culture, so let's talk more about them.
